Siliguri is located in span across Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal on the banks of River Mahananda and the foothills of the Eastern Himalaya is the third largest city of West Bengal and Largest City in North Bengal. Siliguri is also known as the Gateway to the North East India or CHicken Neck and is famous among the travelers for its temples and tea gardens but mostly they are attracted toward this city for its connectivity to other regions of the North-East. Siliguri is the second most important city in the state of West Bengal, after Kolkata.
Siliguri being a commercial center for the North Bengal, it draws migrants from other states who come in search of livelihood and has become a significant trade center of West Bengal. It is also the tansit point for airway,roadways and rail traffic to the adjoining countries of Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal, and to the North East India.
Siliguri Municipal Corporation or SMC was established in the year 1994 and has been responsible for the civic infrastructure and administration of the city of Siliguri.The first municipality office was set up in Hill Cart road. It was a wooden construction. The first chairman of Siliguri Municipality was the then Sub Divisional Officer [SDO] Sachindra Mohan Guha. In the year 1994 Siliguri Municipality was awarded Corporation status.
Siliguri Municipal Corporation areas includes both in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri district. Out of 47 wards of SMC, 17 are in Jalpaiguri district.
City Centre, Siliguri is a high point in the evolution of a growing metropolis that is increasingly influenced by four major drivers - quality housing, quality working, quality shopping and quality entertainment.
